The Hospice: A Sanctuary of Compassion
The experience of visiting homes as part of the Home Rural Palliative Care Project has been nothing short of heart-wrenching. Led by Dr. Ravi Livingston, the team encountered countless patients abandoned by their families, left to suffer alone in unimaginable conditions—some even found in cowsheds, awaiting their final moments in isolation. Witnessing this suffering ignited a vision: a hospice that would serve as a refuge for the forsaken.
Moved by this dire need, the Kurian Foundation committed to building a state-of-the-art hospice at the Bangalore Baptist Hospital’s Devanahalli Campus. Construction began in 2019, but the global pandemic brought unforeseen delays. Finally, in 2023, the hospice was completed—a 25,000 sq. ft. beacon of hope and dignity. After receiving all statutory licenses, the facility was formally inaugurated by Karnataka’s Health Minister, Mr. Gundu Rao, in September 2024.
Since becoming fully operational, the hospice has been a place of solace for 10 to 15 patients daily, with the capacity to care for over 50 individuals in need of palliative support. Designed for comprehensive and compassionate care, the facility includes spaces for meditation and prayer, a chapel for spiritual comfort, and seminar rooms for discussions, research, and training.
This hospice stands as a testament to humanity’s duty to uphold dignity in life’s final chapter, ensuring that no one faces their last days alone or in suffering.
